Frosted Sweet Heart

Pink and white hearts are "frosted" with spackling and bear secret messages on the back.

Materials

STYROFOAM Brand Foam
  • Large Frosted Sweet Heart -
  • 1 Heart, 6" x 1"
  • Small Sweet Heart Notes -
  • 1 Sheet, 1/2" thick
Other Materials
  • Large Frosted Sweet Heart -
  • Spackling compound, 8 oz.
  • Acrylic craft paint: pastel pink, purple, yellow,green
  • Mixing utensils: bowl, table knife
  • Cake decorator with tips
  • Plastic wrap
  • 12 " of 1" satin ribbon
  • Small Sweet Heart Notes -
  • Metal cookie cutter, heart shaped
  • Serrated knife
  • Acrylic craft paint: pink, white, purple, green, yellow
  • Heavy weight construction paper

Tools

  • Scissors
  • Low temperature glue gun and glue sticks

Instructions

Large Frosted Sweet Heart -
  • 1. Prepare spackling compound to use as icing. Place 1/2of spackling medium in bowl and whip until smooth withtable knife. Add water, 1/2 teaspoon at a time, tillsmooth and thin enough to extrude through cake decorator.Conduct a test run; add more water if necessary. Covercontainer with plastic wrap until ready to use white "icing".
  • 2. Prepare remaining spackling compound, dividing intosmall portions and coloring with acrylic paints. (Note:food coloring will not tint the spackling compound; youmust use acrylic craft paint.)
  • 3. Spread "icing" on foam heart with table knife; icesides first and then top. Decorate heart with cakedecorator, just like you would a cake. The model picturedused the following tips: small leaf, flower, medium starand round. If desired, use small round tip to write "To aSweet Heart". Immediately wash all utensils with warm,soapy water when done.
  • 4. Let dry overnight.
  • 5. Make a loop with 4" length of ribbon; glue to back ofheart. Tie remaining ribbon in bow; pin to top of heart.Small Sweet Heart Notes -
  • 1. Using Pattern A and the serrated knife, cut 3" heartsfrom foam sheet. (Hint: For smoother cuts, wax the knifeblade with an old candle.) Or, make hearts by pressing cookie cutterinto foam sheet. Smooth rough edges with a scrap of foam.
  • 2. Prepare spackling compound, following Steps 1 and 2 above.
  • 3. Decorate hearts as in Step 3 above.
  • 4. Let dry overnight.
  • 5. Using Pattern B, cut hearts from construction paper; fold in half.Write sweet messages inside; glue cards to back of iced hearts.
