Contemporary wall sculpture appears to be made from textured metal discs but this stunning and lightweight wall art is made from STYROFOAM™ Brand foam and textured paper. Wow!

Materials

STYROFOAM Brand Foam
  • Discs: 1" thick, one each 16" and 4";
  • two each 12", 10", 9" and 6"
  • Scraps, 1" thick
Other Materials
  • Specialty papers: textured**: corrugated,
  • cross hatch, pebbled; silver mirrored
  • tagboard; steel gray; black
  • Acrylic craft paints: white, black
  • **Many of the textured papers were purchased onPaperArts.com.
  • (Note: Some of textured papers shown are painted with acrylic
  • craft paint in shades of gray. Textures on several
  • papers have been enhanced by highlighting the textures
  • with a contrasting paint.)

Tools

  • Scissors
  • Craft pins
  • Toothpicks
  • Picture hanging wire
  • Thick white craft glue
  • Low temperature glue gun and glue sticks

Instructions

  • 1. Determine papers to be used on each disc. Place discs onreverse sides of papers and trace around discs with a pencil.Carefully cut out each circle. Cut coordinating 1" strips fromeach paper to cover the edges of each disc.
  • 2. Attach the paper strips to the edges first. Spread a thin, even layerof glue around edge of selected disc; adhere paper strip, pinning endstill dry. Repeat until edges of all discs are covered.
  • 3. Spread a thin, even layer of glue on top of disc and adherepaper circle. Smooth paper and if necessary, place book on topto weight paper while it dries. Repeat, covering all discs. Let dry.
  • 4. Referring to photo, arrange the discs on work surface (seediagram). Assemble sculpture using low temperature glue andtoothpicks. To insert toothpicks between adjacent discs, coverone end of toothpick with glue and insert in foam disc; addglue to other end and insert in adjacent disc.
  • 5. If necessary, support larger discs underneath with a scrappiece of STYROFOAM™ brand foam inserted between discs. Let dry.
  • 6. Hang the sculpture using picture wire. Knot the ends of thewire and insert the knots into the surface of the STYROFOAM™brand foam. Secure with a generous amount of low-temperatureglue. Reinforce with a small square of paper glued over thearea.
