Snowcone Snowman Ornament

This sweet snowman makes an irresistible Christmas tree ornament. But don't eat him and you'll enjoy him for years to come!

Materials

STYROFOAM Brand Foam
  • Ball, 3"
  • Cone, 6" x 3"
Other Materials
  • Acrylic paints: dark brown; tan
  • Lightweight spackling
  • Birch woodworking buttons, 5/16", two
  • Felt: green; blue
  • Black craft foam sheet
  • White pom pom, 1/2"
  • Tiny purple feather
  • Silver cording
  • Ultra-fine iridescent glitter
  • Pink chalk or cosmetic blush

Tools

  • Serrated knife
  • Candle stub or paraffin
  • Fine-line red permanent pen
  • Pencil
  • Ruler
  • Compass or 2-3/4" circle template
  • Wooden skewers, two
  • Disposable bowl and spoon
  • Paintbrushes: medium flat; small round
  • Disposable palette
  • Water basin
  • Paper towels
  • Scissors
  • Low-temp glue gun and glue sticks
  • Thick, white craft glue
  • Gloss-finish dcoupage medium

Instructions

  • 1. Wax serrated knife with candle stub or paraffin. Cut thinslice from bottom of foam ball to create flat "neck" area.Insert wooden skewer into flat sides of ball and foam cone.
  • 2. Mix small amount of spackling with tiny bit of water indisposable bowl until it is the consistency of creamy yogurt.Hold foam ball by skewer and use flat side of knife to spreadmixture over rounded surface. Dip knife in water and smoothunwanted bumps or lines. Place skewer in heavy glass or jarwhile spackling dries.
  • 3. Paint foam cone tan; place skewer in heavy glass or jar todry. Paint tops of buttons dark brown; let dry.
  • 4. Use glue gun to glue ice cream scoop to cone. Glue buttoneyes to ice cream scoop, gently pressing buttons intospackling. If spackling begins to crack, remove buttons andgently depress area with tip of pencil. Re-glue buttons.
  • 5. Glue pom pom nose to face. Blush cheeks with tip of finger.Draw smile with red pen. Dab a bit of dcoupage medium overcheeks and eyes to add shine; sprinkle cheeks with glitterwhile medium is still wet. Let dry completely.
  • 6. Cut a 1-1/2" x 18" strip of blue felt; fold in half and tiearound neck for scarf. Cut fringe into ends. Cut a 1/4" x 6"strip of green felt for hatband; set aside.
  • 7. For hat, cut a 2-3/4" circle and 2" x 6" strip from blackcraft foam. Roll strip into tube, overlapping short endsslightly; use glue gun to secure edge. Glue tube to center topof circle. Glue hatband around crown. Glue feather insidehatband as shown. Use glue gun to glue hat to head.
